Creating CG fire and smoke has been always so heavy when it comes to simulation and rendering , unlike fumefx u dont have to wait for a long time to generate smoke and fire. Fume fx run on 3dsmax aas a plug in and lots of resources in youtube and vimeo about this. If you want to start , you can search for Allan McKay who has been sharing all his secrets about fumefx
